IntraFish Media announces publication of its newest Industry Report,

“The Sustainable Seafood Movement: The Next Phase”

The sustainable seafood movement traces its beginning back to 1996, when Unilever and the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) began discussions on how best to assure the long-term sustainability of global fish stocks and the integrity of the marine ecosystem.
The talks led to the creation of the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC), the world’s first eco-label provider. At the same time, the Monterey Bay Aquarium was releasing the first version of its Seafood Watch card, a wallet-size card identifying good and bad seafood choices.
In January 2006, Wal-Mart, the world’s largest retailer, announced it would modify its procurement policy and only buy MSC-certified seafood. The aquarium has distributed more than 10 million Seafood Watch cards.
Both the MSC and Seafood Watch cards serve as barometers for measuring the development and acceptance of the sustainable seafood movement. Together they represent phase one of the movement.

Where does the sustainable seafood movement go from here?
IntraFish Media’s “Sustainable Seafood Movement: The Next Phase,” explores phase two of the sustainable seafood movement and those NGOs who form the foundation of the movement and influence its direction. Through interviews and discussions with leading non-governmental organizations (NGO) and industry professionals, the report provides:

  • An in-depth analysis of and guide to the various eco-label programs available, including a comparison of program costs, scope to help guide seafood professionals in selecting an eco-label program that fits their needs
  • A comparison of the financial resources of the seafood industry’s leading trade groups and leading environmental NGO’s
  • A roadmap to the future of the sustainable seafood movement from NGO and seafood industry leaders playing an active role in steering the movement
  • An overview of the major issues that will affect the development of the movement over the next decade
