A new Industry Report from IntraFish Media

Written by Drew Cherry, John Evans and Karl Erik Stromsta

Massive salmon sector consolidation, ownership changes and the spinning off of seafood assets by major brands have led to a shake up of the list of Top 25 European seafood companies.

Led by higher raw material prices and booming seafood demand, pushing their growth to new heights, Europe’s seafood companies are cementing their role among world’s leading food providers.

As the industry grows and consolidates, the cash continues to flow in. The Top 25 seafood companies in Europe now account for €13.6 billion ($19.1 billion) in sales, 12.3 percent more than last year, when they accounted for €12.1 billion ($17 billion) in turnover.

The Top 10 alone is up 50 percent from last year, with combined sales of €8.4 billion ($11.8 billion).

By the end of 2007, there will be five billion-dollar companies in Europe, compared with just one three years ago.

The merger of Pan Fish and Fjord Seafood under the Marine Harvest umbrella, in addition to the prominence of private equity firms such as Permira, FoodVest and MW Brands, have new names at the top of this year’s list.

At the same time, unexpected deals lower down such as the acquisition of Five Star Fish by British Seafoods, has seen some new names grab a place in the pantheon as others slid out.

The Top 25 European Seafood Companies list features a full ranking of European companies by 2006 sales figures, their comparative places on the list in the year prior, key company personnel, contact information and company details, and an overview of Europe’s biggest mergers and acquisitions in 2006-2007.

IntraFish’s Top 25 European Seafood Companies report is the only accurate ranking of the most important players in the seafood sector, and an essential business tool.
