For many, eco-labels are synonymous with sustainable seafood.

Indeed, eco-labels schemes grab plenty of headlines and attention. The Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) eco-label program, in fact, was an early pioneer in the sustainable seafood movement.

Eco-labels certainly have a place in the sustainable seafood landscape, but they are not the only solution seafood buyers and suppliers are using to ensure the seafood they buy and sell is sustainable.

In a new report just released, IntraFish Media explores sustainable seafood programs that go beyond eco-labels.

Many of these programs incorporate eco-labels from the MSC, Friend of the Sea, the Global Aquaculture Alliance and others into their schemes, but they further offer a wide range of services to help firms improve their sustainable seafood sourcing, especially for those fisheries and aquaculture operations that don’t have or can’t afford an eco-label.

Through a question and answer format, leading sustainability groups explain what services they offer seafood firms that want to evaluate, establish or modify their sustainable seafood sourcing programs.

The report provides:

  • A comprehensive overview and history of 10 leading sustainable seafood programs;
  • A comparison of how these programs differ from eco-labeling schemes;
  • An overview of what specific services – at what cost – each group provides;
  • Predictions from each group on where the sustainability movement is headed; and
  • Details on how these 10 programs are affecting the world’s marine ecosystems.

If you are interested in sustainable seafood strategies outside the typical eco-label option, this report is a must-have.
