German warmwater shrimp firm Ristic, owner of a recently European Union-certified organic shrimp farm and vessels in Costa Rica, sees the future of profitable and sustainable business in organic products. The company produces 1,000 metric tons of organic shrimp from its farm and buys from other Central American farmers as well as operating its own vessels. The vessels catch around 600 metric tons of shrimp a year. It owns four trawlers in Costa Rica and has joint ventures with four others. The company has invested in reducing the bycatch from its shrimp trawlers. Ristic employs between 100-300 people in Costa Rica on its vessels and in its plants, depending on the season. In total, the volumes of organic and non-organic shrimp Ristic brings in from its own farms and vessels -- as well as shrimp bought from other companies -- is between 8,000 metric tons to 10,000 metric tons a year. Although the volume is trending up, It opened its plant in Puntarenas, Costa Rica in 2006. The inauguration of the production plant, Rainbow Export Processing S.A., was carried out by the Costa Rican fisheries minister and the German ambassador in Costa Rica. Ristic's head office is in Oberferrieden, Germany. Ristic products are delivered to both foodservice and retail customers. Ristic sells Naturland-certified organic shrimp. The company sells under its own brand Ristic, as well as doing private label business. The company also sells under the Rainbow Jewels brand.
