C.C. JENSEN (CJC) of Svendborg, Denmark, claims its oil and diesel fuel filters will help prevent engine, gearbox and hydraulic breakdowns - and has laboratory tests to prove it.

The CJC separator is a mechanical filter retaining 98.7% of all particles greater than 3 micron and 80% of all particles greater than 0.8 micron in one pass.

"Filtration of less than three microns is provided with our filters, which means oil will last longer. There will be less mechanical wear and unplanned downtime, fuel efficiency will increase and other filters will need to be replaced less often, " says Kim Kjaer of CJC.

"Dirt and water in oil and fuel will be virtually eliminated with a CJC fine filter system, " he adds.

The owner of Natalie B from the Isle of Man decided to fit a CJC filter separator for fuel oil after experiencing a number of engine breakdowns relating to fuel contamination.

A CJC filter separator type PTU2 27/27 P with a pump flow rate of 120 litres was installed.

No further engine breakdowns were experienced and her owners decided to install a CJC HDU fine filter for the engine lube oil and an HDU 15/25 for a hydraulic system.

All three installations have been in operation for more than 18 months and there have been no more breakdowns, according to CJC.

Denmark's Britta Brock had repeated failure in her hydraulic system, so Skipper Kaj Brock decided to optimise the oil filtration system.

An analysis showed the boats oil to be "extremely contaminated" with metal, sand and plastic particles, as well as heavy formation of oxidation products and water.

A CJC HDU 15/25 PM filter with a pump flow rate of 120 litres was installed.

Samples were taken after ten, 60 and 120 days: all showed reductions in contamination levels.

The company claims that not only is the oil now clean but, also, oxidation deposits on valves, pipes and tanks walls are removed.

"About 80% of all breakdowns in hydraulic systems are caused by oxidation.

Normal inline filters will not remove the catalysts which cause oxidation, but ours do, " says Reimar Larsen of CJC.

"So, if by installing a CJC system you prevent one breakdown - especially while fishing - the filter has paid for itself 100 times over, " he tells FNI .

"One fisherman told us that replacing his hydraulics was just a normal service he expected to do on a frequent basis. He was willing to accept paying for this, but he had problems with putting in a filtration system, " says Reimar Larsen.

"It takes a lot of work on our part to get people to believe what our filters can accomplish, even more so since dirty oil looks clean to the naked eye.

"People they don't see the need to install or replace existing filters. But, once our filters are installed, customers will see that they just didn't buy a filtration system, they bought reliability as well!"

seven vessels from Viking Fishing of South Africa; Polar Amoroq and Polar Nattoralik of Greenland; Huginn, Bjorn and Asgrimur Halldorsson of Iceland, Albacora Cuatro of Spain, Golden Touza of the Falkland Islands; and Celeste Karlijn of Holland.
