LAUNCHED this year, the M 43 for Veronica is the fourth series of MaK's new generation of long-stroke engines.

The series is to be built in six, seven, eight and nine-cylinder versions to fit in above the M 32 "which has met with extraordinary success since its introduction in 1994," according to MaK of Kiel, Germany.

The new engine will also be available in 12, 14, 16 and 18-cylinder V- configurations to cover the output range from 10,800 to 16,200 kW.

"This series was developed by applying the well-proven design principles of the new engine generation which has been shaped since 1992 with the series M 20, M 32 and M 25. The operational results of these engines already established on the market are confirming the benefits of a long stroke," claims MaK.

"IMO requirements with regard to NOx reduction are met by means of a high compression ratio and a corresponding firing pressure at attendant low consumption. Therefore, the M 43 also features a high stroke-bore ratio of more than 1.4. The engine has a cylinder output of 900 kW/cylinder at 500 to 514 rpm.

According to MaK, the advantages of this engine are: safe heavy fuel operation, extremely low fuel consumption of 175 g/kWh at 0.6 g/kWh, low lubricating oil consumption and long overhaul intervals for wearing parts.

"Short maintenance times, such as disassembly of the main running gear in one hour, demonstrate the ease of maintenance. Further claimed benefits are: low installation cost due to a simple and reliable foundation and short commissioning times.

The M 43 sets new standards with regard to ease of installation and commissioning, reliability, operating costs, maintenance and compliance with environmental regulations, claims MaK.
