PURSE SEINING

PURSE seining may have been eclipsed by mid-water trawling in some fisheries, but this method of encircling shoals is still catching the bulk of the world's pelagic fish supply. FNI's special feature reports on progress being made to accurately measure the tonnages of fish being brought aboard ship - and, therefore, the amounts being landed into fish factories by individual vessels. Also, it highlights how co-operation between Norwegian and Taiwanese net-makers has cut the cost of building a purse seine for a new Norwegian catcher.
